Eye Drops with Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Bacteria

Rheingold Giuffra Ruffo Plotkin & Hellman LLP Protects Those Who Have Been Injured From a Defective Product

Pseudomonas is a common bacterium found in many different environments, such as water, soils, and plant or animal tissue. However, despite it being in common environments, it may lead to serious infections. Risk of infection increases for people with weakened immune systems, external medical devices, and underlying lung conditions.

FDA Recall Products

This bacteria has been found in many eyes drop products and has caused infections and severe injuries. In January of 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to consumers of the EzriCare Artificial Tears due to infections of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. As of March 2023, the FDA has issued more warnings advising the immediate stop of use for the following eye drop products:

Injuries and Symptoms

The concern keeps increasing when, according to the CDC, ten different brands are involved in injury cases. As of March 14, 2023, sixty-eight patients across the country were found to have serious Pseudomonas bacteria infections. Of which, four people had their eyeballs removed, eight others lost their vision and three were reported. Some symptoms of an infection include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Eye pain or discomfort
  • A discharge from the eye
  • Blindness
  • Death
