A fellow inmate stabbed disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar multiple times in a federal prison in Coleman, Florida where he is serving multiple life sentences for molesting child gymnasts. The stabbing occurred during an altercation with at least one other inmate. Authorities arrested Nassar in 2016 for multiple counts of sexually abusing young girls under his care.
Judges sentenced Nassar to decades in prison for sexually assaulting gymnasts, including Olympic medalists.
Nassar will serve decades in prison for convictions in state and federal courts. He admitted sexually assaulting athletes when he worked at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians. Separately, Nassar pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.
During victim impact statements in 2018, several athletes testified that over the course of Nassar’s more than two decades of sexual abuse they had told adults what was happening, including coaches and athletic trainers, but that it went unreported.
Michigan State University paid $500 million to resolve civil lawsuits from 300 women who were sexually assaulted by Nassar. USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee made a $380 million settlement. When the survivors made victim impact statements, they said they had told officials at Michigan State and USA gymnastics what had happened to them but nothing was done to stop Nassar from continuing his predatory attacks on vulnerable young girls.
As a result of the convictions and sentencing, Larry Nassar will spend the rest of his life in federal prison. The damage to those young women, now adults, is immeasurable and no amount of jail time or civil compensation will be able to undo the harm he caused.
