Talcum Powder Causing Ovarian Cancer

Dangerous and Defective Products Lawyers in New York

Talc is a mineral used by Johnson & Johnson in several products including Baby Powder and Shower to Shower. Talc is a mineral composed of magnesium and is the softest known mineral.

Research from as early as the 1990s indicated a link between talc and cancer. As a result, in 2006 Johnson & Johnson’s talc suppliers added warning labels to its products. However, Johnson & Johnson did not follow suit. Despite knowing the risk of talc particles moving up the genitourinary tract, the company kept silent, unwilling to part with any profit.

Our New York dangerous drug attorneys are aggressively investigating claims of cancer associated with the use of Talc. Sherri Plotkin, one of our lead attorney’s in this litigation, has years of experience in litigation and can help you navigate the litigation process.

Talc is Associated with Ovarian Cancer

Talc users have been found to develop higher levels of these cancers:

  • Fallopian tube epithelial
  • Primary peritoneal
  • Epithelial ovarian cancer
  • Serous
  • Endometrioid
  • Clear Cell
  • Borderline Serous
  • Borderline Endometrioid

Talc is Used on an Almost Daily Basis

Women who for years applied talc-based powders to their underwear, sanitary pads or private parts may be at an increased risk of ovarian cancer. Women may also have been exposed to powders through coated diaphragms or condoms. Since the powder is so fine, it can easily migrate into the body, inflaming tissue and over prolonged use causing tumors to develop. For this reason it is also not recommended to use talc-based powders on babies, lest they inhale the powder particles, which can cause respiratory issues.

Talc is used in various industries including:

  • Paper making
  • Plastic
  • Paint and coatings
  • Rubber
  • Food
  • Baby powder

Juries Award Multiple Multi-Million Plaintiff Verdicts Against Johnson & Johnson

Five trials resulted in massive monetary awards of $417 million, $110 million, $72 million, $70 million, and $55 million. These plaintiffs used J&J’s talc-based Baby Powder and Shower to Shower for several decades.

Plaintiffs have alleged that in order to increase sales, J&J failed to warn customers that its talc-based products could cause cancer. In one talc-based cancer case, cancerous tissue was removed from plaintiff’s body and examined by doctors who found talc particles embedded in the cancerous tissue. The doctors determined that talcum powder was the cause of her cancer. Dr. Daniel Cramer of Harvard University, one of the testifying doctors in that case testified that talc-based powder could be a contributing factor in 10,000 cases of ovarian cancer annually.
