Today marks the 93rd birthday of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Our nation celebrates him and his immeasurable impact with a national holiday on the third Monday each January.
Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and influential activist who led the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. King was widely respected for his use of nonviolent resistance strategies and civil disobedience.
Dr. King led numerous marches for various injustices such as desegregation, labor rights, and black citizens’ righting votes.
In 1964, Dr. King was recognized for his longstanding commitment to activism with the Nobel Peace Prize.
