Study finds large number of women suffer injuries during delivery

By Rheingold Giuffra Ruffo Plotkin & Hellman LLP

Childbirth is a wondrous and dangerous process. At the beginning of the last century, about 9 in 1,000 women died during the process. Unfortunately, according to a series of recent studies, a significant number of women endure injuries associated with delivery before they seek medical assistance. Moreover, even the women who do ask for help, doctors misdiagnose or ignore their concerns.

For instance, a study published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology reported that 24 percent of women experience pain during sex even after a year and a half after delivering the baby.

Furthermore, a second study published in the journal PLoS One discovered that 77 percent of mothers experienced back pain, and a further 49 percent experienced urinary incontinence. It is evident from these studies that post-birth injuries are common among mothers, and they typically go undiagnosed.

Regardless of why the doctor missed the injury, it does not matter. It is the doctor’s duty to investigate whenever a patient reports pain or an injury diligently. Pain, unfortunately, is a complex issue. Pain can indicate a physical issue, mental or even emotional. Doctors often misdiagnose actual physical trauma-related pain for post-partum emotional concerns.

Furthermore, doctors are hamstrung because women often fail to come forward and accurately describe their pain and physical issues. These concerns often touch on taboo topics, childbirth, and incontinence, and cultural pressures dissuade many women from speaking candidly with their doctors.

If you or a loved one was injured while giving birth due to doctor negligence, then you may want to speak with an attorney. It is not your fault if you suffer an injury during delivery. It is normal to incur injuries, and it is up to the doctor to properly diagnose and treat you. You shouldn’t have to suffer in silence because a doctor made an error. An attorney can help you get the compensation you need to get the medical attention you deserve.
