Parents of Children Killed In Traffic Accident Plea For Traffic Changes

By Rheingold Giuffra Ruffo Plotkin & Hellman LLP

Should NYPD focus on effectively tracking down violations or crime fighting? Councilman Brad Lander states that “Recruits don’t sign up for the academy to write speeding tickets.” But others, such as parents of children killed in traffic, believe that there should be more changes in traffic laws so that the public is safe.

In recent news, parents urge New York City’s motorists not to disagree with changes within traffic regulations. These regulations include lower speed limits, more tickets to drivers and redesigned streets. At a City Council hearing on Mayor de Blasio, there were emotional pleas by parents of children killed in traffic for changes to occur. For example, Amy Cohen, a mother of a 12 year old son who was hit by a car in Park Slope, testified for the “Vision Zero” plan. It is stated that “she pushed to go even further than the 25 mile per hour speed limit de Blasio has proposed, saying the limit should be 20 miles per hour” according to the New York Daily News. Another parent named Dana Lerner explained how her son was killed by a cab on the upper West Side, yet the driver was not charged with a crime and still carries a valid license to drive his taxi. Questions are still directed towards de Blasio’s administration officials on the traffic plans. The people are also focusing questions towards NYPD’s vow to step up enforcement.
