By Rheingold Giuffra Ruffo Plotkin & Hellman LLP

By: Laurel Beth Penn

In 2013, in New York City, there have been approximately 15,000 pedestrians and cyclists injured as a result of motorists and 155 of them were killed. The most recent fatality occurred Sunday morning January 19, 2014 when a 45-year-old man, from Manhattan’s East Harlem, was killed after he was trapped under a B15 city bus while riding his bike on W. 125th St. near Lenox Avenue.

This is the first bicycle-related fatality of 2014. EMT responders used airbags to lift the man from the bus but it was too late, he was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital shortly thereafter. No one was charged in the incident.

In 2012, 11,621 pedestrians and 3,844 cyclists were injured in motor vehicle-related collisions, and many of these injuries resulted in life-altering injuries and deaths.
