How safe are the heavily promoted Axiron and AndroGel testosterone drugs? Is there litigation for injuries related to testosterone drugs? A recent study regarding testosterone therapy has unveiled a worryingly high percentage of one or more severe injuries and deaths caused by heart complications in patients taking testosterone medication. Such cardiac complications, identified in the report by the Journal of the American Medicine Association, include stokes, pulmonary embolisms, heart attacks, arrhythmias, coronary artery disease and transient ischemic attacks (“mini-strokes”).
Drugs such as Axiron, Androgel and Testim were designed to treat males suffering from hypogonadism, i.e. low testosterone levels. However, subsequent to drug companies’ successful marketing efforts, these drugs have frequently been administered to males whom have never suffered from Hypogonadism or “Low T”. The marketing ploy of these companies has been to call into question a man’s “masculinity”, and market the drugs as a way to improve sex drive, reduce fatigue or control mood changes. With these marketing tactics, it is no wonder that the number of prescriptions for such drugs multiplied 5 times between 2000 and 2011, as reported in the JAMA’s recent study.
