Intrauterine Devices (IUD) are a commonly utilized form of contraception used around the world by women. However, the most common brand, Paragard, has been linked to numerous health problems in women resulting in a plethora of lawsuits. Paragard IUDs may carry outcomes that have dangerous consequences. Many women, due to manufacturing flaws, have been subject to health conditions.
Complications: Perforation, Migration, Infection, Expulsion
An IUD is usually a small piece of plastic that comes in various shapes that is inserted into the uterus to provide birth control. Under the best circumstances, IUDs are expected to last from 3 – 6 years and be 99% effective. While these results are promising, the women have also suffered unexpected injuries from the usage of IUDs. IUDs can become embedded in the uterus, break or cause a perforation of the uterus. Perforation refers to the IUD pushing into or through the muscle of the uterus. Other complications of the IUD are the risks of infection and expulsion. Expulsion occurs when the IUD moves from its intended position and migrate to different areas such as the vagina. This sometimes causes pain in the user and can decrease the contraceptive effectiveness of the device. These instances of IUD migration often result in users having to partake in surgery to have the device be removed and replaced.
Defective Design: Old Plastic Fractures, Broken Arms
In addition to these serious complications, it has been found that as an IUD gets older and remains in the uterus, it may also simultaneously become weaker and can fracture resulting in breakage upon removal. The Paragard has a “T” shape where the arms can break upon removal. IUDs can cause pain and discomfort during the insertion process and can cause cramps and backache as well as irregular periods throughout the use of the device.
While there are some very effective components of the IUD, women need to be very aware of the dangerous complications that can result as a consequence of this usage. Many women around the nation have filed lawsuits in response to their negative experiences with the device. For example, in 2016, a Nebraska woman, Stephanie Ideus, filed a lawsuit against a Paragard manufacture alleging that the device broke and imbedded into her uterus and needed surgery to remove it.
These negative consequences are painful and inconvenient. Evidently, efforts need to be made to improve the quality of intrauterine devices. If you have experienced injuries as a result of IUD usage you may be eligible for compensation.
