In an interview I gave last week with NBC News, I told the stories of my clients who’d been sexually abused by Darius Paduch. During the interview, I described the horrific abuse these men suffered and the indignity of having the hospital that employed Paduch dismiss their allegations. “They both told him he misinterpreted it, that he imagined it,” said Giuffra, who has filed a lawsuit on behalf of the man. “He was completely dismissed.”
Because these complaints were dismissed, Paduch was able to continue his reign of terror until he was finally arrested. His life sentence is a fitting punishment for a man who used his position to prey on unsuspecting patients who had come to him for help. The number of complaints that the hospitals and New York Health Department received and found unsubstantiated or at the least found insufficient evidence to move against Paduch is incredible. Paduch could have and should have been brought to justice years earlier. The number of young men who suffered as a result is not known. We do know that Paduch’s behavior became more brazen and outlandish as he was able to get away with his criminal behavior.
