Proton Pump Inhibitor Lawsuits

Proton Pump Inhibitors, or PPIs, is a heartburn medication and has been prescribed to patients to reduce gastric acid production. The U.S. FDA had issued warnings to consumers about side effects occurring from PPIs that include infections, vitamin deficiencies, bone fractures, and kidney complications.

Medical practitioners have understood that PPIs have shown good results in the short-term, but are not always the most reliable form of treating gastric acid production. This is why the FDA has advised against patients using a PPI more than three times a year.

Side Effects After Using PPIs

PPIs have successfully treated many different medical conditions, from simple indigestion to acid reflux and ulcers, as well as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Issues and complications arose when patients were relying on the medical devices over the long term. Extended use has been linked to a higher incidence of kidney problems, and the elderly were more than 2.5 times likely to fracture a hip bone.

Some additional side effects of PPIs include the following:

  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Bone fractures
  • Muscle spasms
  • Seizures
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Kidney inflammation
  • Magnesium deficiency

PPIs have long been prescribed at a frequent and rapid pace because they were thought to have been a safe form of heartburn treatment. However, the research is showing that this may not be the case. While many patients may largely be unaffected by these side effects, if they do occur, the ensuing complications are very serious, and doctors should address the situation as soon as possible.
