Robotic Radical Prostatectomy Injuries

Trusted New York Robotic Surgery Malpractice Attorneys

Radical prostatectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the prostate or surrounding tissues. It is usually performed on those suffering from prostate cancer. Depending on the severity of the illness, a patient may need to undergo standard surgery. However, many radical prostatectomy surgeries can be performed with minor incisions, using a robotic medical device. These robotic surgeries are often less evasive and bring the promise of an easier recovery. Unfortunately, robotic-assisted surgeries have also been the cause of several injuries, and in some instances, wrongful death.

Rheingold Giuffra Ruffo Plotkin & Hellman LLP is now accepting clients in New York and nationwide who have suffered prostatectomy complications from a robotic surgical device. We will review your situation and may be able to file a lawsuit against the surgeon for medical malpractice or file a product liability claim against the manufacturer for flawed design. In some instances, both the surgeon and manufacturer may be held liable.

Da Vinci Prostatectomy Complications

The robot used in a robotic laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is called “da Vinci” and is manufactured by Intuitive Surgery, Inc. When robotic surgeries were first introduced, several companies manufactured these devices. However, Intuitive Surgery, Inc., now has an exclusive monopoly on robotic surgeries in the United States.

There have been several reported problems associated with these devices, including:

  • Failure to properly train surgeons on using the device
  • Insufficient insulation, allowing electricity to escape from the machine to other parts of the body
  • High-heat energy causing burns and other injuries

These issues may result in damage to the urethra, severe infections, pain, erectile dysfunction, and other complications. Patients can find themselves enduring one or more additional surgeries to correct the robotic injury. If you or a loved one has been harmed during a robotic radical prostatectomy procedure, the time to act is now.
