Violation of safety rules when operating a motor vehicle is irresponsible and can risk the lives of many pedestrians. Did you know that Northern Boulevard and 61st street has been one of the second deadliest roads in Queens, New York between 2010 and 2012?
In recent news, the New York City Department of Transportation is trying to improve the visibility of drivers in the Woodside intersection to make it easier for pedestrians to cross the dangerous six-lane roadway. The intersection will undergo major changes as a result of an unlicensed tractor trailer driver running over 8-year-old Noshat Nahian three months ago. Mauricio Osorio-Palominos, a 51 year driver of the truck that killed Noshat, was charged with third degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
According to Dalila Hall, borough commissioner for the Department of Transportation, “We have developed a safety plan based on the crash data, traffic and pedestrian volumes, truck routes and transit patterns in the area.” Their agency would also like to begin construction immediately, with safety enhancements and other work that will be proposed later in the year under the Vision Zero program.
