Not So Fast and Furious: The Bike Accident Edition

Growing with the amount of bicyclists in New York City is the amount of bike accidents. Earlier last month, a 52-year-old woman riding a Citi Bike fell to the ground after her bicycle was clipped by a vehicle. Victim was pedaling south on Broadway near Grand St. around 4:35 p.m. when a 2013 Isuzu clipped her, sending the woman toppling into the street, cops said.

This accident was the second reported Citi Bike crash in the weeks since the program launched. A 25-year-old woman was mowed down on W. Houston St. on May 30 after she allegedly tried to blow through a red light. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

In NYC, under state law, a bicycle is considered a “vehicle,” which means that the cyclist has the same rights to use the road as any other vehicle. This also means that a bicyclist must exercise the proper standard of care when riding a bicycle.

Exercising the proper precautions while riding a bike can significantly cut down the amount of bicycle accidents.
