The New York City Housing Authority has exposed thousands of New York City apartments to lead poisoning, as a result of falsely claiming proper inspections had taken place. Despite maintaining otherwise, senior NYCHA executives were fully aware the lead paint certifications were inaccurate. However, even NYCHA Chairwoman Shola Olatoye continued to claim these legally required inspections had, in fact, occurred. This gross injustice has likely affected over 55,000 apartments, in which over 4,200 have families with children under the age of 6 as residents.
Lead poisoning can be incredibly dangerous, as even the smallest amount may cause irreversible effects. It is also particularly hazardous for children, who may consume it without realizing. For whatever reason, the NTCHA stopped doing its necessary annual inspections as of 2012, risking the lives and wellbeing of countless innocent individuals.
Some common side effects of lead poisoning include, but are not limited to:
- Developmental delay and learning difficulties
- Hearing loss
- Mood disorders
- Joint and muscle pain
- High blood pressure
- Miscarriage, stillbirth, or premature birth
- Reduced sperm count
- Seizures
- Abdominal pain
- Vomiting
