The thought of those responsible for the care and keeping of our loved ones being the very same people who abuse and neglect them is sickening. Nursing home abuse happens every day across the nation and is more common than people know. Hearing about nursing home abuse cases is upsetting enough, but for families that have a loved one in a long-term care facility, hearing these stories can be even more alarming.
In a recent news story, a 55-year-old New York nursing home worker is facing felony charges for the abuse of a 68-year-old disabled resident. According to authorities, surveillance video shows the employee of Absolut Care of Orchard Park push the disabled resident to the ground and then kicking her lower body before exiting the building and closing the door behind her.
According to the report, the resident suffers from seizures due to a brain injury and is at high risk for falls. The video shows the nursing home worker exiting the building, without returning to check on the resident and not alerting others of her fall.
The 55-year-old care worker now faces a felony charge of endangering the welfare of a physically disabled person, as well as a charge of willful violation of health laws. The felony portion of her charges could lead to a four-year prison sentence.
For those with family members in long-term care facilities, stories like this one may have them questioning if the nursing home setting is right for their loved ones. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of family members, social workers and other care providers, nursing home neglect and abuse still occurs. For families that suspect their loved one has been the victim of these crimes, speaking to an attorney may help bring much-needed attention to a growing problem, while providing protection to families and their loved ones.
